Thanks for the note. In retrospect, I think my perception was colored by a full day of touring Washington DC, where there are amazingly wonderful museums – each and every one with security checkpoints. After all that and fighting through DC Friday rush hour traffic, I just wanted to kick back and relax at a drive-in. The aggressive tone of Bengies’ rules drove me away.

I always seek out drive-ins when I travel, and take lots of photos. I’ve never gotten one complaint about taking or posting these photos. I’ve always thought it would be fun to go this drive-in and see how long it takes to get thrown out!

Also, I believe his claim of having the largest screen in the US is BS. He used to claim having the largest on the east coast, and of course he has to qualify his current claim with some “perfect picture” jargon. I’m thinking the Melody Cruise-In in Springfield Ohio is larger.

The problem I see with all of Chakeres is that they don’t like to take any risks, which is absurd. Their other drive-in’s are only open till the last weekend in august, and often don’t open this early in the year…. we went to their springfield drive-in and they had no running water.

The Movie Manor is the nifty motel facing Screen 1 of the Star Drive-In of Monte Vista. (You can also watch Screen 2 from some rooms if you twist around a little.) Opening Day varies widely, but it's typically in the range of late March to early May. The Mesa's Opening Day for 2013 is March 22, for example.

Stumbled upon your blog site yesterday and love what your doing here. Particularly loved the clip of the short film posted here about Colorado drive-ins.

I have a friend who owns the Centerbrook Drive-in in Indiana and have been recently researching how digital conversion is affecting Colorado drive-ins, particularly the 88 and Holiday Twin as I live on the north side of Denver.

I look forward to seeing more posts in the near future – keep up the good work!

Thanks for writing, Michelle, but Carload just tries to keep track of what’s going on; we don’t own or run any drive-ins.
