I don’t know what’s going on at the Landmark Cinemas in Peoria IL, but the general manager of the Landmark Recreation Center is testing a drive-in theater on an apparently flat concrete parking lot there. According to the Peoria Journal Star, they tried it for 10 days, discovered that Mondays are often pretty quiet, and they’re asking the Peoria city council for another 10 days to test it some more before the drive-in season ends.

Holiday Twin sees opportunity in digital conversion
The bad news is that the Holiday Twin Drive-In (Fort Collins CO) is already closed for the season. The good news is that it’s pushing forward with digital conversion and even sees the cool stuff it could do once it’s freed from needing those huge cans of film to show a movie, the Rocky Mountain Collegian reports.

Excuse me for just a bit of cynicism, but it really feels like The New York Times publishes some sort of “drive-ins still exist” article annually. I’d say that it would be an easy assignment for the summer intern, but this article is by Brooks Barnes, who lives in Los Angeles and covers media regularly for them.
Snark aside, this is an unusually thorough example of this standard article. Photographer J. Emilio Flores does a great job of painting the twilight beauty of cinema under the stars with the Mission Tiki (Montclair CA) as his canvass.
My favorite quote is from John Vincent Jr., president of the United Drive-In Theatre Owners Association and owner of the Wellfleet Drive-In (Cape Cod MA): “The conversion to digital is expensive, for sure, but it also means we think there is a future.”
